Airport's Current and Near-Future Development, Modernization, Expansion & Growth

The implementation of the all-encompassing Airport Maser Plan commenced at Vnukovo International in late 2003, following the transfer by the federal government of the controlling stake in the Airport to the government of Moscow.

The long-term Master Plan contains provisions until the year 2015, and is aimed at transforming Vnukovo International into a highly competitive air transportation hub of international significance. One that would offer a comprehensive range of quality services to both its passengers and tenant/customer carriers.

The total investment volume under the Master Plan is expected  to exceed USD 1 billion, with the Airport’s annual passenger throughput capacity eventually reaching 20 to 22 million.

The Master Plan comprises a number of the following major construction and renovation projects:

  • Airfield infrastructure development, including an 800-meter extension of one of the runways, construction of new taxiways and renovation of the existing ones, apron area extension to add more aircraft stands, installation of ICAO Category 3-enabling DVOR/DME systems throughout
  • Construction of a centralized into-aircraft fueling network comprising a total of 35 [fueling] hydrants
  • Renovation and further development of the terminal and infrastructure for handling governmental, official delegation, dignitary, and VIP flights
  • Major overhaul and renovation of the existing cargo terminal
  • Construction of an all-new ATC facility and installation of its state-of-the-art equipment
  • Construction of multilevel car parks
  • Construction of a modern airport hotel complex
  • Construction of aircraft parking and MRO hangars
  • Construction of an aircraft Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul Center
  • Construction of general aviation facilities including business centers annexed to the new airport hotel
  • Construction of a flightline indusrtial park to house a variety of the airport divisions and services
  • Development of new mass transit systems linking the Airport with downtown Moscow including a rapid transit system, a Moscow Metro line extension out to the Airport and a monorail link

The cornerstone project of the entire Master Plan is the construction of an all-new passenger Terminal A with a spacious arrivals/departures concourse featuring numerous contact gates.

The project itself was developed by Messrs. Obermeyer Planen of Germany. The Terminal with a total floor space of 150 thousand square meters is due for completion in 2010. Following the new Terminal A’s service entry, the Airport's other two terminals will be reallocated, with the international charter and LCC flights moving to Terminal B, and Terminal D continuing on as a dedicated facility for domestic LCCs.
